Cargo throughput at main ports across China was around 500 million tons in April, down 1.9 percent from a year earlier, a primary calculation conducted by the Ministry of Transport (MOT) showed on Wednesday. Cargo throughput for foreign trade would fall nearly 6 percent year on year in April to 160 million tonnes due to a shrinking international market, the MOT said.
In another news, China's leading trade fair, known as Canton Fair, with a history of 52 years, ended Thursday with export orders down almost 17 percent, a strong signal that China's export will still be under tramendous pressure in the near future. More than 165,000 oversea buyers attended the fair, down 5.1 percent from the previous fair.
China's export has been declining for the last several months. Even though there are some good signs that the economy might be turning around, there still seems to be a long way to go for China's export. On the other hand, given China's stimulus package focusing on promoting domestic consumptions, export may not be as important as before to China's economic development.
