China's State Council unveiled measures on Friday to boost biological industry development. The measures, consisting of 33 items in ten sections, were to implement China's medium- and long-term plan (2006-2020) and the 11th five-year plan (2006-2010) for biological industry growth.
The plans aim to strategically foster bio-industry as one of China's high-tech pillar industries. For that purpose, the measures intend to guide technologies, human resources, and funding into this industry; form market oriented industrial organization structure; create proprietary-technology oriented high-tech biotechnology companies; improve protection of bio-technology patents and biological resources; and enhance bio-products safety.
The measures list the following areas as key fields for modern biological industry development: bio-medicine, bio-agriculture, bio-energy, bio-products manufacturing, and biological environmental protection.
