An executive meeting of China's State Council presided over by Premier Wen Jiabao on Wednesday approved plans in principle to develop the economic zone along the Bohai coastline in Liaoning Province in an effort to rejuvenate the traditional industrial base, improve the macroeconomic structure along China's coastlines, balance regional economic development, and further open China's economy.
The economic zone ranges about 700 square km and covers coastal cities like Dalian, Dandong, Jinzhou, Yingkou, Panjin, Huludao. No specific policies are announced at the meeting. It only called for related central government agencies to provide policy support and guidance to help the Liaoning Provincial government to set up and implement development plans. Overall, the policies will focus on the development of shipbuilding, petroleum refining, advanced equipment manufacturing, raw materials, high-tech industries and agriculture processing.
Along China's coastal lines, Shenzhen was the first and the most successful special economic zone. Following the establishment of economic zones, China's coastlines got developed first. The government policies played important roles for the development of Shanghai, the Pearl River delta and the Yangtze River delta. Relatively, the Bohai coastal line has been falling behind. Now the government is paying special attention to promote the economic development of this area, the rejuvenation of this area becomes more promising.
