Chinese Commerce Minister Chen Deming met with the U.S. Trade Representative Kirk in Beijing on May 25. They exchanged views on trade and economic issues covered by the 2nd China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogue.
Chen stated that there was a great potential in cooperation between the two countries. And the two sides could solve problems taken place in cooperation by communication and dialogue. Chen hoped that the U.S. side should take full account of China’s concerns on recognition of China’s market economy status, relaxation of export control measures against China and transparency of investment policies, so as to create favorable conditions for further development of Sino-U.S. trade and economic cooperation.
Chen also said that to promote Doha Development Agenda was significant for promoting the recovery and development of the world economy. And China always holds the positive position in it. The great achievements are hard-won with the long negotiation. So the two sides should boost the negotiation based on the existing achievements, which is also the hope of most WTO member countries. China hopes that the U.S. could play more constructive role in negotiations.
Kirk said that the people of the two countries gained a lot of benefits from open to each other. So the two countries should take the opportunity to continue expanding bilateral trade and investment. Besides, Kirk made a briefing on U.S. positions and concerns on DDA.
Vice Minister of Commerce Yi Xiaozhun and the U.S. Ambassador to WTO Punke also attended the meeting.
