China is planning for an installed nuclear power capacity of 86 GW by 2020, up nearly 10-fold from the 9.1 GW capacity it had by the end of last year.  China had 11 working nuclear reactors as of the end of last year.  The country's total projected power capacity is 1,500 GW by the year 2020.

In April, the government announced that China planed to build five nuclear power stations with 24 reactors in the eastern and southern regions this year.  The five projects will be constructed in the coastal Zhejiang province, Shandong Province and southern Guangdong and Hainan provinces.  The original 2020 target for nuclear power was set at 40 GW.  In April, people were talking about 60 to 70 GW, and now the target is 86 GW.

Last week, Mr. Shi Pengfei, vice-president of Chinese Wind Energy Association said that China plans to build seven wind power bases by 2020, with combined capacity of around 120 GW.

Mr. Xie Zhenhua, deputy director of China's National Development and Reform Commission, told reporters last week that as of the end of 2008, China's solar power capacity had reached 120 million square meters, ranked number 1 in the world.  Wind power reached 10 million KW, ranked number 4 in the world.  Water power was also ranked number 1 with 163 million KW.
